Teen Years

Ages 13-18

Building healthy foundations and establishing care relationships. This is the time for education, prevention, and open conversations.

What to Know

ACOG recommends the first reproductive health visit between ages 13-15. This visit typically does not include a pelvic exam. It's about building a relationship with a healthcare provider and learning about your body.

First OB/GYN Visit

When:Ages 13-15 (first reproductive health visit)
What:General health assessment, menstrual history, BMI check, health education. Usually NO pelvic exam.
Why:Establish care relationship, answer questions, identify any concerns early

HPV Vaccination

When:Ages 11-12 (can start at age 9); catch-up through age 26
What:2-dose series if started before age 15; 3-dose series if started at 15 or older
Why:Prevents HPV infections that can cause cervical, vulvar, vaginal, and other cancers

Mental Health Screening

When:Annually, starting at age 12
What:Screening for depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and substance use
Why:Early identification leads to better outcomes; adolescence is a vulnerable time for mental health

Vision & Hearing

When:Periodically, ages 13-21
What:Vision and hearing screening tests
Why:Detect problems that can affect learning and development

What's NOT Needed Yet

Pelvic Exams

Not routinely needed for teens without symptoms

Cervical Cancer Screening

Pap tests don't start until age 21, regardless of sexual activity

Mammograms

Breast cancer screening not recommended for teens

Bone Density Testing

Not indicated at this age for average-risk individuals
